Jeffrey McGee

Prior to founding Makai, Jeff was Head of Marine Research for New York-based Poten & Partners, Inc., the largest shipbroker in the U.S., where he revamped its entire research operation, bringing more sophisticated analytics and forecasting tools to the firm and establishing a comprehensive framework for fundamental oil industry analysis.  Jeff also supported business development at Poten, playing a critical role in the selection of Poten to the tanker broker panels for the two largest Chinese refiners.

Prior to that, Jeff served as the Director of Tanker Research in London for Simpson Spence & Young, the world’s second-largest shipbroker, and was also responsible for risk management at SSY’s hedge fund, Bluewave Fund Management, which traded dry bulk and tanker freight derivatives (FFAs) and options.  Energy Risk magazine voted SSY as #1 for Research in Freight for 2011.

Before  SSY, he was a Director at Drewry Shipping Consultants in London, where he was responsible for its tanker and dry bulk shipping consultancy and for its growing risk management practice, advising clients on the use of FFAs.  Prior to that, he was Director of Mergers & Acquisitions at APL Logistics, a unit of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines, leading acquisition and joint venture efforts across Asia and Europe.

His background also includes ten years of progressive experience in capital markets, M&A, risk management and strategic planning at General Motors and Philip Morris, ultimately serving as Treasurer of Philip Morris’ financial services subsidiary.  Jeff began his shipping career at Caltex Petroleum, with experience in refinery operations & planning, tanker chartering & operations and oil product trading throughout the Asia/Pacific region.

He holds an MBA from The Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College and a BS in Civil Engineering and Economics from Rice University.

Jeff is FCA registered in the United Kingdom.
